Happiness is a universal pursuit, yet its meaning and source can vary significantly from one person to another. From a spiritual perspective, happiness transcends fleeting pleasures and material success; it is about connecting with something greater than ourselves.
Understanding True Happiness
In many spiritual traditions, true happiness is rooted in inner peace and fulfillment rather than external circumstances. This kind of happiness is often described as a deep sense of contentment that arises when we align with our true selves and embrace the present moment.
I often got the question from people visiting my yoga classes "What is my secret of happiness"?
There is no secret. I often ask them what is happiness for them.
Here is the time to ask yourself: "What does happiness mean to you"?
We humans often measure happiness with material things or relationships, buying a car, new clothes, taking a trip or starting a relationship, thinking this will make us happy.
The answer to that is, Yes it will make us happy, but only temporary. Mostly it will feed the ego to receive something which we think we need.
Often we have the feeling to miss something in our life, even if we already have so much, still we feel deficiency.
Why is this happening?
It happens, because we are too consumed by the material world we live in and don’t recognise the small things, which actually make us really happy.
For example the sunshine, the water we drink, the air we breath, the sunrise and the sunset. We think something/someone will fix us and gives us the happiness we search for.
The Role of Mindfulness
Here comes the role of the mindfulness.
Mindfulness practices are main focus in many spiritual teachings. They encourage us to become aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. By cultivating mindfulness, we can learn to appreciate the present, letting go of past regrets and future anxieties. This shift in focus often leads to a profound sense of joy that is stable and enduring.
The easiest thing to do is to look inside ourselves, yet is still hard to conquer our own ego and see things objectively. Practicing mindfulness will help us easily to release everything blocking us from whitin.
Connection and Compassion
Spiritual teachings emphasize the importance of connection—not just with others, but with the world around us. Acts of kindness and compassion can foster a sense of belonging and purpose. When we engage in selfless acts, we tap into a collective energy that can elevate our spirits and contribute to a deeper sense of happiness.
Happiness depends on us, it’s based on our choices, the way we see and live life.
The way we think, all this is creating energy which corresponds with our surroundings. We attract what we project. We feel what we create. We experience what we need.
As soon as we realise that a brand new door will open with so many possibilities and ways to change what we don’t like about a situation or ourselves.
The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude is another key element in the spiritual pursuit of happiness. Regularly reflecting on what we are thankful for can shift our focus from what we lack to what we already have. This practice opens our hearts and minds, allowing us to experience joy in the simplest aspects of life.
Letting Go of Attachments
Many spiritual paths teach the importance of detachment. Happiness often eludes us when we cling too tightly to people, possessions, or outcomes. By practicing non-attachment, we can embrace life’s uncertainties with grace, finding joy in the journey rather than fixating on specific results.
Finding Your Path
Ultimately, the journey to happiness is deeply personal. Each individual may find their own unique path through meditation, prayer, community service, or simply spending time in nature. The key is to seek practices that resonate with your spirit and foster a sense of connection, purpose, and inner peace.
What we need to do is, to start today. All is about the mindset, it won’t be easy, but is so worth it. It won’t be easy, because every day we are put in a situation which will test us how we react, how we feel, what we're going to do.
This is just part of the lesson. We are here to learn and to grow spiritually.
We are here to become the best version of ourselves.
We are here to live in the Now. Not in the past or the future.
We are here to Be!
